Connect with God and Connect with Others – We at Getty Street desire to connect with God and connect with others in meaningful ways. God created people for relationships. He designed us to have communion with Him and live in community with people who are created in his image. Loving God and loving people are exactly what Christ said are the greatest commandments (Matthew 22:37-39). Because of this desire to fulfill the Greatest Commands, we see our mission in three ways.
1. Grow with God – Ephesians 4:15 – “Speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into Him who is the Head, that is, Christ.” – From the youngest of Christians to the most seasoned, everyone has room to grow with the Lord. In fact, one of the reasons why we are still on this earth is because God has a plan for us. Connecting with God means that we continually pursue his presence and love. It also means that we seek how we can go through life with the Father leading the way. God simply isn’t finished with us yet. That means that we do mess up, but it also means that we get back up again.
2. Belong to the Family – Romans 12:5 – “In Christ, we who are many form one body, and each members belongs to all the others.” – God never intended his people to go through life alone. Although that means He is with us, it also means that we belong to a family. Yes, just like a family, we may not always see eye-to eye, but we are here for each other. We are the body of Christ, brothers and sisters of our Lord and sons and daughters of our Father in Heaven. We don’t just belong to Him, we belong to each other.
3. Share with Others – 1 Thessalonians 2:8 – “We loved you so much that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well.” – The good news about Jesus is so good that it has to be shared with others. This may mean that we teach others about the man Jesus Christ or what the bible says about any number of issues. It also means that we share Jesus in our lives. We do not just preach the message of Christ, we live it. We try to love our neighbors and show that Christ is alive and well in our words and actions.
